Holden Beach Day Seven

Today was our last full day at Holden Beach, and I can honestly say it has been an amazing week.  The McLochlin family left this morning at 8:20, and Eric, Nicole, Brendan and I left at the same time to go on a double date to the Sunrise Pancake House in Calabash.  I can’t remember the last time I’ve had such a good breakfast.  Brendan found the restaurant online, and it did not disappoint.  I tried the banana, Carolina pecan pancakes with a side of bacon; Nicole had chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream and extra chocolate chips; Bren had pineapple upside down pancakes; and Eric ordered eggs with toast, bacon, and grits.  The atmosphere was cheery and fun, and we really loved the bright sun/pancake mural in the background.  After breakfast, we stopped at a couple consignment shops where Nicole found a little black dress, and I am proud to say I bought nothing; and we also stopped at a couple souvenir stores.  Brendan and I bought a Christmas ornament.  It’s a seagull because if we’re reincarnated we want to come back as seagulls, and the seagull is disguised as a pirate because we love pirates.  While we were gone, Nanny, Po, Dad and Mom drove the length of the island, including the gated part, which they got a pass for.  And once we got back, we found out Nanny and Po had gone antiquing, and we handed the car over to Mom and Dad so they could go out to lunch and driving around.  While they were gone, we packed up our stuff, and Brendan and I put the seashells we’ve collected over the week into a mason jar to put in our bathroom once we have our own apartment in less than a year.  We then lounged on the porch and talked until Nanny and Po got home and we played more men vs. women six-handed euchre.  I have never been so frustrated at a card game in all my life.  Even when I could see the cards in Po and Brendan’s hands and signaled to Nicole and Nanny what I had in my hand, and they told me what they had in theirs, we couldn’t win.  We couldn’t get a good hand to save our lives.  It was awful.  After the card playing was over, I sulked for awhile and then walked along the water with Brendan until I felt better.  By the time we got back inside, my parents had gotten home and brought with them boiled peanuts, which they boys have been talking about trying all week.  They’re a Southern delicacy, but I think they tasted like soggy peas.  I did not enjoy them.  Yuck.  After the peanut tasting, Brendan and I started to prepare the last dinner at Holden Beach.  We made took the shells off and deveined the fresh shrimp my parents brought back with them, along with cooking fresh scallops and fresh tilapia.  We prepared the shrimp and scallops in butter and oil but did a little more with the fish.  We coated each side of each fish with flour, fish seasoning, salt and pepper before frying it until it was a light brown on each side.  We then put the eight filets in the oven to keep them warm while we made the sauce, which consisted of butter, lemon juice, garlic salt, salt and pepper.  The first time around I burnt the sauce so bad it turned black and made the whole kitchen smoky because there were too many things going on at once, but the second time around, it turned out perfectly.   All the seafood turned out to be delicious, and Brendan specially made Nan tomato soup and grilled cheese, which he has been promising her for months.  For dessert, we ate the special cheesecake the boys surprised us with after a quick trip to the grocery store to “only buy water.”  After finishing dishes and cleaning up, we changed into our swimsuits and took one last swim in the ocean.  Brendan and Eric both found sand dollars for me and Nicole, which really added to the happiness of the night, and the ambiance of the group was one of enjoyment.  At around 8:30, we came inside, saying good night to the ocean for the last time in awhile, and Brendan and I talked about the fact that senior year at Butler is going to start happening before we know it before going to bed.  I am feeling very sad to leave but glad to have had the experience.
