Welcome to Ireland

Day 8 and night 8 were eventful to say the least.  I spent my morning and afternoon cleaning the house and getting it ready for the woman who is staying at the house, which is also a bed and breakfast every now and again.  I also finished my book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, which I would recommend, and I started Water for Elephants.  I can’t remember the last time I read an entire book just for enjoyment.  At around 7:30, we left for a birthday party for Grania’s friend Ann.  The party was small and at Ann’s sister and brother-in-law’s house.  Ann’s two sons who are my age, her friend Siobhan, Siobhan’s husband and two kids, Ann’s mother, David, Ann’s brother-in-law, and Grania, Joe and I were the guests.  The party began with Italian food and wine for dinner.  After only two half glasses, I was really starting to feel it.  It doesn’t take me long.  After awhile, I switched spots with Ann so I could sit by her sons, one of which lives in Chicago.  Jack is 22 and does construction for the time being, and Paul and his girlfriend Ruth, who live in Australia, were also home on holiday, which was conveniently Ann’s birthday.  I had one more glass of wine, but it tasted like nail polish remover, as opposed to the first couple glasses that tasted like juice, so that really slowed me down.  I took a walk with Jack to the store around the corner for some fresh air, and when I got back, I spent awhile talking to Ann’s mother who is 90.  Let me just say, she may be 90, but she is still kicking it.  I enjoyed getting to know her.  Then, Jack, Paul, Ruth and grandma left for their next engagement, and I was left with the other four.  A couple glasses of wine and champagne later, I somehow ended up in a bed at David’s house and didn’t wake up until five this morning, only to be completely disoriented about where I was.  I slowly pieced the story together in my mind and went back to sleep until eleven, and I woke up with only a dull headache.  I still have never gotten sick or had a bad hangover, which I am proud of.  And I also learned that when Ann put me to bed, she turned off the light and closed the door saying, “Welcome to Ireland.”  After a cup of tea with Ann and David, Ann drove me back to Joe and Grania’s.  Along the way she mentioned that she is spending the weekend in Dingle and wondered if I would like to tag along.  I thought that sounded like fun, so right now I’m about to get ready and head off to Dingle with her.  I’m not really sure what we’re doing, but I’m sure it will be adventurous and memorable.  I love this spontaneity.
